Wix or WordPress? 8 main differences!

If you've never built a website before, choose Wix or WordPress. This is not an easy decision as we are dealing with two great platforms here. Most websites are still built using WordPress, but Wix has grown in popularity in recent years. Below is an overview of 8 important differences.

1. User-friendliness

  • Wix

Wix is a very user-friendly website builder. What you see is what you get. Wix is made for non-technical users so you don't need coding knowledge.

  • WordPress

Quite difficult to learn (not beginner friendly). If you are going to work with WordPress it is very nice if you are technically skilled and have knowledge of coding. If not, you may need to hire someone for that.

2. Templates

  • Wix

You can use more than 500 professionally designed templates within Wix. You cannot switch templates without redesigning your site.

  • WordPress

Almost unlimited number of templates you can work with. For this you almost always need knowledge of coding.

3. Apps and plugins

  • Wix

Limited number of apps and plug-ins available but all apps and plug-ins are carefully checked, tested and monitored for functionality and security.

  • WordPress

Very flexible in apps and plug-ins that can often be adjusted yourself, but can lead to problems if they fail.

4. Webshop

  • Wix

Wix offers several built-in e-commerce functions. The Wix webshop module is perfect for small and medium-sized web shops.

  • WordPress

For a webshop in WordPress you have to use a plug-in such as WooCommerce. Excellent for medium and larger web shops.

5. SEO

  • Wix

Good basic SEO with the possibility for advanced SEO.

  • WordPress

Good basic SEO with the option of plug-ins for advanced SEO.

6. Maintenance

  • Wix

Wix manages all updates and maintenance work for you. All updates are free!

  • WordPress

Requires regular self maintenance especially if there are updates. You are responsible for the maintenance of your site.

7. Helpdesk

  • Wix

Extensive helpdesk and clear tutorials. You can also get help by phone or email or contact the By Marko team.

  • Wordpress

Large network of users and forums, but not well organized. There is not really a clear helpdesk that responds in a timely manner.

8. Prijzen en abonnementen

  • Wix

Wix offers various premium subscriptions, varying in price. You can also use Wix for free, but it has limitations.

  • WordPress

Prices can vary enormously depending on various factors such as hosting, themes, plug-ins, hiring a programmer, etc.

Wix vs WordPress is a personal choice. WordPress is more powerful and flexible, but it also takes more time and you need coding knowledge. Wix is extremely user-friendly, much more enjoyable and you don't need any technical knowledge. The choice is yours, but if you ask us, we will know the answer ;-)
